About me

My name is Tim Norton and I'm currently living in Melbourne, Australia. I own TNT Personal & Group Fitness, specialising in one-on-one and group health and fitness training.

When I was a kid I was always outside playing some kind of sport, whether that was bike riding, playing football, tennis, basketball or even the odd jog.

It wasn't until I was 16 that I started doing well at school cross country and suprisingly won my event at school in year 10 off no running training, just bike rides and lots of tennis. This continued up until year 12 of high school when I quit tennis and joined my local athletics club, Ringwood Athletics Club (home of many Olympians - Cathy Freeman and Kyle Vander-Kuyp to name just a few).

I progressed quite quickly with my training and in 2001 won most of my school athletics events and cross country.

I continued to progress to the point where in 2004 I became the Victorian Open mile champion, had won numerous junior state titles over 800m and 1500m, represented Victoria on many occasions and in 2006 I won the Victorian 1500m championship (see pics below), and ran some great times, missing the Commonwealth Games qualifier in the 1500m by 2.8 seconds (PB 3:42.8). What made my Victorian Championship win so special (and the highlight of my athletic career so far) is the fact that it occurred at the MCG, I'd been sick for 2 weeks before the race and quite soon after I'd have a horrendous run of injuries and hip surgeries that ruined all hopes I had of making an Olympic or Commonwealth team.

In 2009 I made a comeback to athletics after years of frustrating injuries and 2 hip surgeries, and after spending a year bulking up as a way to burn energy so I could justify eating (gaining 10kg in muscle in 9 months). I began coaching myself and within 4 months of training I'd lost 10kg's of muscle and ran the National qualifier in the 800m (1min 51) which to me was a huge achievement off such a limited preparation, and honestly I was just happy to be racing again.

During 2012/2013 my highlights included running a big PB at the tan in Melbourne, 11mins 16secs, which I couldn't believe when I crossed the line and saw my watch. Also in 2013 I ran my fastest 1500m since before my comeback, running 3:48, and claimed my biggest ever scalp... beating Craig Mottram at the 2013 Stawell Gift Invite Mile (below, my training partner Tom and me on the start line at Stawell 2013)!

Away from running... My University studies include a Bachelor of Exercise Science and also a Graduate Diploma of Education. I'm a qualified teacher and have spent many years teaching primary school P.E and doing casual relief teaching.

Throughout the many years of being an athlete, a coach, my university studies and my general interest in health and fitness I have gained substantial knowledge in training methods, nutrition, psychology, supplementation, injuries, injury prevention and athletic training and am now putting it to good use as a Personal Trainer.

 My PB's are 800m - 1.50. 1500m - 3.42. 10km - 31.31. The Tan - Melbourne (3.8km) - 11:16.
